Dr Wajid Khan, PhD, a renowned software engineer and entrepreneur, shares his insights on startups, AI, and leadership in an exclusive interview.
Q1: What inspired you to start your entrepreneurial journey?
I wanted to solve real-world problems through technology and create opportunities where innovation and growth could flourish without limitations or rigid structures.
How do you envision AI shaping the future of startups and entrepreneurship?
AI drives transformation by automating workflows, delivering data insights, and accelerating decisions. Startups using AI scale faster by optimising operations and offering personalised services.
Q3: Can you provide an example of AI’s role in accelerating data-driven decisions?
AI enabled us to process large, unstructured data streams, extracting actionable insights with unparalleled speed. By automating pattern recognition, decisions that relied on complex data analysis were made faster and with greater accuracy.
Q4: What advice would you give to founders struggling with technical debt?
Technical debt is a silent killer of growth. It’s crucial to prioritise clean code, regular updates, and scalable architecture from the beginning. Short-term hacks may seem convenient, but they create long-term bottlenecks. My rule is simple: spend 20% of development time on proactive maintenance.
Q5: How can data visualisation help entrepreneurs make better decisions?
AI-driven visualisation reduces months of data analysis to minutes. By highlighting key trends instantly, entrepreneurs can identify opportunities and optimise operations with minimal effort.
Q6: What qualities do you believe define a successful founder?
Resilience, adaptability, and a learning mindset. Founders must be prepared to face setbacks and constantly evolve. Success is not just about having a brilliant idea but about executing it with discipline and pivoting when necessary. Networking and building strong teams are equally vital.
Q7: As a mentor, what common mistakes do you see startups make?
Many startups focus too much on perfecting their product without understanding market needs. Others underestimate the importance of marketing and customer acquisition. I always advise founders to prioritise customer feedback and invest early in their brand’s visibility.
Q8: What role does mentorship play in startup success?
Mentorship accelerates growth by offering guidance from experienced professionals. I’ve mentored several PhD students who have gone on to lead successful projects. A good mentor can help you avoid pitfalls, refine your strategy, and build confidence in your vision.
Q9: How do you balance your roles as a founder, teacher, and software engineer?
It’s all about time management and knowing your priorities. I focus on high-impact tasks and delegate wherever possible. Teaching keeps me grounded in the fundamentals of technology, while my entrepreneurial work pushes me to stay innovative and forward-thinking.
Q10: What excites you most about your future projects?
The opportunity to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs. Initiatives like The School of Data and Information Visualisation aim to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in a data-driven world. Watching people turn ideas into profitable ventures continues to inspire me.
